The Old and the New Covenant

There is a clear difference between the Old and the New Covenant. It is essential for Christians to know that the Bible is a book of covenants and God deals with us through covenants. There are many covenants in the Bible, but there are two main ones:

  1. The Covenant of the Law also known as the Old Covenant, The First Covenant or the Mosaic Covenant.
  2. The Covenant of Grace also known as the Second Covenant or the New Covenant.

Before we proceed, it is important for us to define the meaning of Covenant. A covenant is an irrevocable vow, agreement, undertaking, commitment, guarantee, warrant, pledge, promise, bond, pact, deal, settlement, arrangement or understanding between two or more parties to carry out the terms that were agreed upon and it can only be broken by death. It is not just something that can be broken when you go to court; it can only be broken by death. Once you get in, you can’t get out. The Covenant is what determines how God deals with man. God does not deal with a man unless He does it through a Covenant; He responds and relates to us through our covenant agreement. Since God’s dealing with man is via a Covenant, whatever the Covenant agreement was, determined how God deals with man.

Hebrews 8:6, “But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. (KJV).” This verse is talking about Jesus being the mediator of a better covenant that is established upon better promises. Let’s read on:

Hebrews 8:7, “For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. (KJV).” The first covenant is the covenant of the Law which is also known as the Mosaic Covenant or the Old Covenant. So, there was a need for another covenant because the first covenant had issues.

Hebrews 10:9, “Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. (KJV).” The first covenant has been taken away; we are now under the second covenant, which is also known as the New Covenant or the Covenant of Grace.

We should be living under the New Covenant because Jesus is the mediator of the New Covenant. It is vital for us to understand this new agreement/covenant to enable us to live right. We cannot afford to be living under an expired or old covenant. It is salient that we understand this because many Christians are still living under the Old Covenant that has expired. This is a major problem with the church today. Many churches are still making their congregation live after an expired covenant.

These scriptures and many more are a direct confirmation that there is an Old Covenant and there is a New Covenant. There was a need for another covenant because there were some faults with the First/Old Covenant. The New Covenant came through Jesus Christ.

Knowing God
That We May Know Him

In Christianity, the doctrine of the Trinity describes God as one God in three divine Persons (each of the three Persons is God himself). The Most Holy Trinity comprises God the Father, God the Son (which is Jesus Christ God), and God the Holy Spirit.
